While the Maharashtra government has a scholarship scheme to support girls’ education, OBC students are reportedly not receiving the full benefit of fee waivers, exposing a disparity in implementation, according to a Loksatta report.
Under the state’s scholarship programme, girls from OBC categories enrolled in private universities are entitled to fee reimbursement. However, two OBC girls are said to have received only ₹40,000 against fee amounts running significantly higher. The shortfall is forcing families to bear the financial burden themselves.
Students from government colleges are getting their fees covered, but those studying in private online colleges and universities under the state scheme are being paid only ₹40,000, whereas the actual fees go up to ₹50,000. The remaining ₹10,000 has to be arranged by the families.
Government scholarship amounts are stated to be ₹40,000 per year, but university fees demand more. The gap between what is sanctioned and what is charged is leaving OBC girl students and their families in financial difficulty.
The issue has been flagged by the OBC Finance and Development Corporation, Nagpur.
