The Embassy of India in Hanoi has issued an advisory for Indian nationals travelling to Vietnam, highlighting concerns related to visa regulations and passport loss.
The advisory states that while Phu Quoc offers visa-free entry to Indian citizens under specific conditions, the exemption is strictly limited to the island and does not permit travel to mainland Vietnam.
It cautioned that in emergency situations—such as medical needs or flight disruptions—travellers may need to travel to cities like Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Without a valid mainland visa, this could lead to delays, travel restrictions, and immigration complications. In view of this, Indian nationals have been advised to obtain an appropriate Vietnam visa before travelling to Phu Quoc, even if their itinerary is limited to the island.
The embassy also flagged several instances of Indian travellers losing passports in Vietnam. In such cases, individuals must immediately file a police complaint in the local jurisdiction, which is necessary for further processing at the embassy or the Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City.
While emergency travel documents can be issued promptly, the advisory noted that Vietnamese authorities may take 3 to 5 working days to grant an exit permit, during which travellers must remain in the country.
The embassy has urged travellers to stay cautious, keep documents secure, and remain well-informed to avoid inconvenience during their visit.
