A proposal to provide official vehicles to chairpersons of special committees in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has sparked controversy, raising concerns over financial burden and violation of existing rules. The proposal has been placed before the Standing Committee and is expected to increase monthly expenditure by several lakhs.
According to existing municipal rules, official vehicles are provided only to key office bearers such as the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Standing Committee Chairperson, Leader of Opposition, and other authorized positions. However, chairpersons of special committees—who mainly have advisory roles and no executive powers—are now demanding similar facilities, putting pressure on the administration.Officials estimate that the cost of each vehicle could range between ₹50,000 to ₹60,000 per month, including fuel, driver, and maintenance.
Additional charges may apply after fixed usage hours, along with per-kilometre costs beyond a prescribed limit. If extended to multiple committee heads, the total monthly expenditure could run into several lakhs.Critics have termed the proposal as a violation of rules and questioned the use of public funds for such facilities. They argue that these committees do not hold administrative authority, making the demand unjustified.
There are also concerns that this move could set a precedent, leading to further financial pressure on the municipal budget. The issue is now before the Standing Committee and is expected to face strong opposition and detailed scrutiny.
