Mayor Nita Thackeray on Tuesday reviewed the status of public toilets, smart toilets and aspirational toilets developed by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) during a meeting held at the civic body’s headquarters. During the meeting, the Mayor directed officials to take strict action against individuals preventing homeless women from using public toilets. She also instructed the administration to install CCTV cameras at all public toilet facilities to enhance security and ensure safer access for users.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Mayor Lila Hathibed, Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhre, Leader of the House Narendra (Balya) Borkar, Medical Services and Health Committee Chairperson Manisha Atkare, Tax Assessment and Collection Committee Chairperson Sarita Kawre, Deputy Chairperson Sunil Hiranwar, Superintending Engineer Dr Manoj Talewar, Chief Sanitation Officer Gajendra Mahalle, Executive Engineer Kamlesh Chavhan, Pravin Kotangale, Deputy Engineer Sachin Chamate, Devendra Bhowte and other officials.
NMC officials informed the Mayor that 36 smart toilets are being developed across various parts of Nagpur for the convenience of citizens. Existing public toilets in the city are currently being operated and maintained by agencies including Multipurpose, Universal Services, Aryabhatta Seva, Sulabh International and Srimo.
In addition, under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, aspirational toilets are being constructed at seven locations, including Futala, Mankapur, Tada Bazaar, near Hitavada Press, Pardi, Gandhibagh and Satranjipura, Executive Engineer Kamlesh Chavhan informed during the meeting. Mayor Nita Thackeray reviewed the condition of toilet facilities across the city and directed officials to submit an accurate report on the number of non-functional and unusable toilets.
She instructed the Public Works Department, Solid Waste Management Department, Sports Department and Garden Department to work in coordination to ensure timely repairs and proper maintenance of toilets located in parks, playgrounds and other public spaces. Stressing the growing need for public sanitation facilities, the Mayor said more toilets should be constructed in market areas and operated on a pay-and-use basis wherever feasible. She further clarified that toilets should not be constructed on footpaths in a manner that obstructs pedestrian movement and directed officials to reopen all currently closed public toilets at the earliest.
Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhre suggested that the design of smart toilets should be made more attractive and user-friendly. Leader of the House Narendra (Balya) Borkar recommended identifying suitable locations and developing compact toilet facilities that can be accommodated even in areas with limited space.
Medical Services and Health Committee Chairperson Manisha Atkare instructed officials to give greater attention to the cleanliness and upkeep of public toilets across the city.
