Researchers at Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University have developed an innovative aluminium “Smart Cage” to protect citizens living in areas bordering leopard habitats in Vidarbha and Marathwada. The device has been jointly developed by Prof. Dr. Sanjay Janrao Dhoble of the university’s post-graduate Physics department and Dr. Amit Ramesh Bansod of the Physics department at Babasaheb Ambedkar College. It has received a design registration from the Indian Patent Office. The cage’s structure is net-like and sits over the head, with the remaining portion secured on the back. When a leopard strikes, a hook on the cage deploys instantly and creates a full-body protective shield.Eight speakers are fitted inside the cage, which rapidly activate and generate signals mimicking sounds like “vaachva-vaachva” (save me), drums and other loud noises — causing the leopard to flee while alerting nearby people for help. The cage is easy to use and its speakers can be charged at home. With leopard attacks rising in Vidarbha and Marathwada, farmers, labourers, students and common citizens live in fear. Incidents near forest areas and attacks by wild animals straying into villages have made public safety a serious concern.Kulsguru Dr. Manali Kshirsagar, Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Raju Hivse, Finance Officer Harish Paliwal, and Babasaheb Ambedkar College principal Dr. Diya Panekar have congratulated the researchers on this notable work.
