Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced that self-enumeration for the upcoming Census has commenced and will continue until May 15. He stated that this will be the eighth Census of independent India and will be conducted entirely in a digital format for the first time. Citizens have been given the option to self-enumerate through a mobile application, with awareness campaigns being carried out across the state to encourage participation.
He further informed that the second phase, house-listing, will be conducted from May 16 to June 14 through designated enumerators. Emphasizing the importance of the Census, Bawankule said it is a crucial component of the democratic system and plays a key role in development planning and policymaking. He urged all citizens of Maharashtra to actively participate and provide accurate information.
The Census will collect detailed data on population, housing conditions, caste, religion, language, literacy, employment, migration, and economic status. In Nagpur, a total of 18,420 enumerators and 2,287 supervisors have been appointed to carry out the process. Authorities clarified that only citizens residing in India will be included in the Census, while foreign nationals will not be counted.
Officials also stated that caste-related columns have been included in the self-enumeration process and will remain part of the final Census exercise. After the self-enumeration phase concludes, enumerators will visit households for verification to ensure accuracy and completeness of the data collected.
