Nagpur has emerged as the second most affected metropolitan city in the country in terms of murder and attempted murder cases, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2024 report. The report has revealed alarming figures pointing towards a steady rise in violent crimes in the city.
As per the NCRB data, Nagpur recorded 88 murder cases in 2024, resulting in the deaths of 90 people. The city’s murder rate stood at 3.5, making it the second highest among India’s 19 metropolitan cities, behind only Patna.
The report further stated that 192 cases of attempt to murder were registered in Nagpur during the year. The city’s attempt-to-murder crime rate was recorded at 7.7, significantly higher than the average metro city crime rate of 3.1.
One of the most shocking revelations in the report is that several murders took place over trivial disputes. NCRB data showed that 30 murder cases were linked to minor arguments and quarrels, while 16 murders were related to financial disputes. Several other cases were connected to family conflicts, personal enmity, and love affairs.
The figures also indicate a continuous rise in murders over the last three years. Nagpur had recorded 65 murder cases in 2022, which increased to 79 in 2023, and further climbed to 88 in 2024.
Although the city witnessed an overall decline of 8.89% in total crimes, violent offences continue to rise at an alarming pace. According to the report, a total of 21,898 crimes were registered in Nagpur in 2024.
The NCRB statistics have raised serious concerns over increasing aggression, intolerance, and violent tendencies in the city, prompting questions about law and order, social stress, and public safety in Nagpur.
