One of the world’s most common women’s health conditions, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, has officially been renamed as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) following a major global initiative led by Monash University.
The name change, published in The Lancet, comes after 14 years of collaboration involving doctors, researchers, patient advocacy groups and women living with the condition.
Experts said the earlier term “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome” often created misunderstanding by suggesting that the disorder was only related to ovarian cysts. However, the condition affects multiple systems in the body, including endocrine, metabolic and reproductive health.
According to researchers, the new name — Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) — more accurately reflects the complex and multisystem nature of the disorder.
Medical experts believe the revised terminology could help improve awareness, diagnosis, communication and treatment of the condition worldwide.
