For the millions of women who silently endure the physical and emotional upheaval of menopause with little medical support, the Maharashtra government has quietly rolled out something significant — a dedicated weekly clinic, free of cost, right inside the urban health system.
Under the ‘Nagri va Gramin Lokkalyan Abhiyan’ launched on the birth anniversary of late Balasaheb Thackeray, the state is expanding its health infrastructure to specifically address women going through menopause. Every Wednesday, menopause clinics will operate at urban health posts across Maharashtra — including Nagpur, where 80 Aarogya health committees covering approximately 1,42,000 women have been formed under the National Urban Health Mission.
At these Wednesday clinics, women will receive free specialist consultations, medicines, mental health counselling, and single-umbrella guidance on diet and lifestyle. The state has also ordered district hospitals and sub-district hospitals to fill a massive backlog of vacancies — 6,000 posts for medical officers and staff under the National Health Mission, 564 posts at Aapla Dawakhana outlets, and 1,000 ASHA worker positions — specifically to make this rollout functional on the ground.
For Nagpur’s women, particularly in dense urban wards where gynaecological care has long been an afterthought, the Wednesday clinic may well become the most useful appointment of the week.
