In view of the rising cases of the deadly Ebola virus infection reported in several African countries, the Central Government has issued precautionary advisories across India. Following these instructions, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has placed a 47-year-old citizen who recently returned from Uganda under 21 days of home isolation as a preventive measure.
According to health officials, the individual is currently asymptomatic and no signs of Ebola infection have been detected so far. However, as a precautionary step, the Health Department will closely monitor the person’s health condition for 21 days.
Officials said Ebola is considered one of the most dangerous viral diseases in the world, with a high fatality rate. Due to the increasing spread of the virus in parts of Africa, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Central Government have advised heightened surveillance and screening of international travellers arriving from affected regions.
Dr. Deepak Selokar, Medical Officer of NMC’s Public Health Department, stated that the citizen had travelled from Uganda to Nagpur recently and has been instructed to remain in home isolation. He added that none of the family members or close contacts have shown any symptoms so far. If symptoms develop, the patient will immediately be shifted to a designated medical facility.
Health authorities have clarified that Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected persons and can cause severe fever, weakness, bleeding, and multiple organ complications. Officials also noted that
there is currently no specific antiviral treatment widely available for the disease.
Meanwhile, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur, has prepared a separate isolation ward and necessary medical arrangements to handle any suspected Ebola cases if required.
