A 4-year-old Asiatic lion named Bharat, brought from Mumbai’s Sanjay Gandhi National Park to the Gorewada Wildlife Rescue and Treatment Centre, is in critical condition, officials said.
According to laboratory reports, the lion is unable to stand properly due to persistent hind limb paresis and has developed bedsores. Bharat is also suffering from alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss.
Officials said treatment provided in Mumbai did not show the expected improvement, following which the lion was shifted to Nagpur for advanced care. A team of veterinarians at Gorewada is currently treating the animal.Doctors have also found Bharat to be Trypanosoma positive, indicating a parasitic infection that can lead to serious illnesses such as sleeping sickness or Chagas disease.
A molecular investigation is now underway to determine the exact nature of the infection. The lion has been kept under quarantine as he remains under stress, and further treatment is continuing.
