With the southwest monsoon’s Kerala landfall now delayed by around four days, Nagpur residents bracing for relief from the ongoing heatwave may have to wait until at least the second week of June before the season’s first rains arrive in the city.
Maharashtra Weather Department head S.D. Sanap confirmed on Tuesday that atmospheric conditions over Kerala are not yet fully favourable for landfall, even as the monsoon has reached the Andaman and Nicobar Islands via Sri Lanka and the Arabian Sea. IMD forecasts place the monsoon’s arrival in Mumbai around June 11, with Nagpur typically following within a few days thereafter.
Meanwhile, Vidarbha — including Nagpur — continues to swelter, with a red alert issued by IMD for the next two days. Sanap said temperatures in Vidarbha could ease by approximately 2°C over the next 28 days as the seasonal transition progresses, but no immediate relief is in sight. Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, Konkan, and Goa are similarly gripped by above-normal heat. The weather department said it would update the Maharashtra monsoon timeline once conditions over Kerala stabilise.
