A political controversy has erupted in Nagpur after BJP leader and former corporator Munna Yadav alleged that a plant suspected to be cannabis (ganja) was found growing inside Gajanan Garden in the Anjani area of the city.
Raising concerns over the upkeep and security arrangements at public parks, Yadav claimed that the plant was discovered within the garden premises and alleged that it may have been planted by individuals involved in substance abuse activities. He said the issue was brought to the attention of the Dhantoli Police, but alleged that no action has been taken so far to identify those responsible or determine how the plant appeared inside the public space.
Questioning the monitoring mechanisms in city parks, Yadav said the incident highlights the need for stronger surveillance and stricter oversight by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. He expressed concern over the alleged presence of such a plant in a recreational space regularly visited by children, senior citizens and families.
The former corporator further alleged that the garden witnesses suspicious movement during the early hours of the morning and claimed that groups of youths frequently gather there before dawn. He also alleged that unlawful activities continue in the surrounding area during late-night hours and accused authorities of not taking adequate preventive measures.
Yadav has sought a detailed investigation into the matter to verify whether the plant is indeed cannabis, identify the persons responsible for planting it, and determine how it remained unnoticed for an extended period. He also demanded enhanced security measures, regular inspections and increased vigilance at public parks across the city.
However, there has been no official confirmation from either the police or the Nagpur Municipal Corporation regarding the nature of the plant or the allegations made by the former corporator.
