A delegation of the Nag Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce (NVCC), which represents nearly 13 lakh traders across the Vidarbha region, met Ajit Kumar, Commissioner (Appeals), Central GST, Nagpur, and extended greetings to him on taking charge of his new assignment.
During the meeting, the Chamber expressed hope that the appellate system under his leadership would become more responsive, transparent and efficient for taxpayers and professionals dealing with GST-related matters. The NVCC delegation also submitted a memorandum outlining several concerns faced by businesses during GST appellate proceedings and urged the department to introduce measures aimed at improving the speed and effectiveness of the appeals process.
Among the key issues raised was the need for faster disposal of pending appeals to reduce prolonged litigation and provide relief to taxpayers. The Chamber also sought adequate opportunities for personal hearings and requested greater consideration of written submissions in deserving cases.
The memorandum called for a pragmatic approach towards procedural and technical errors in cases where the core issue or merits of the matter remain unaffected. It also recommended the continued use of virtual hearings, saying they improve accessibility and help businesses cut compliance costs. The trade body further urged the department to ensure timely electronic communication of hearing notices and appellate orders and sought consistency in decisions involving recurring legal issues to provide greater certainty to taxpayers and minimise avoidable disputes.
Another suggestion was the introduction of regular interaction between tax authorities and trade associations to better understand practical challenges faced by the business community and to encourage smoother compliance.
Responding to the suggestions, Ajit Kumar appreciated the Chamber’s constructive approach and assured the delegation that efforts would be made to ensure a fair, transparent and efficient appellate mechanism within the provisions of the GST law. He also underlined the importance of regular dialogue between tax authorities and industry representatives to improve voluntary compliance and reduce litigation.
The meeting was attended by NVCC President Farooque Akbani, Secretary CA Hemant Sarda, Indirect Tax Committee Convenor CA Ritesh Mehta and Central GST Superintendent Prashant Warkar.
