With the monsoon yet to arrive and El Niño conditions threatening a below-normal season, water reservoirs across the Nagpur division are holding only 35 per cent of their total capacity, raising concerns about a potential water crisis in the months ahead.
The three reservoirs that supply water to Nagpur city — Totladoh, Khindsee, and Kamthi Khairi — currently stand at 50.51 per cent, 60.74 per cent, and 74.89 per cent respectively, providing some short-term buffer. However, the Nand reservoir has fallen to a critical 15.14 per cent. The overall divisional average of 35 per cent is a cause for concern given the forecast.
Last year’s above-normal rainfall had filled most reservoirs to capacity, masking the stress that would otherwise have been felt during the summer. But the meteorological department has forecast a delayed monsoon onset and below-average rainfall this year due to El Niño influence, raising the prospect of a severe water shortage if the season underperforms.
Water experts have urged Nagpur residents to use water conservatively through the year to ensure adequate drinking and domestic supply.
