As part of its power sector modernisation programme, the Maharashtra government is set to introduce smart electricity meters across the district. While authorities project the technology as a step towards greater efficiency and consumer empowerment, many residents remain wary of the transition.
Among the sceptics is Shahnawaz Sheikh, who questioned the reliability of the new meters. “The new smart meters continue recording consumption even during power outages, resulting in inflated bills,” he alleged. Sheikh opposed the rollout, claiming that electricity bills could nearly double for consumers after the installation of smart meters.
However, Vidarbha Taxpayers Association (VTA) secretary Tejinder Singh Renu urged citizens not to form opinions without understanding how the system works. “Consumers currently operate under a postpaid billing system, whereas smart meters will allow them to monitor and manage their electricity consumption more effectively. Since the meters are being installed free of cost, there is no reason to oppose the initiative without first knowing its advantages,” he said.
At the same time, Renu emphasised the need for a phased and transparent implementation. “The rollout must be practical and should not be rushed. Authorities need to create awareness among citizens and ensure complete transparency so that consumers are confident the system is being introduced in their interest,” he added.
