Voting for the by-election to the Nagpur Local Authorities Constituency seat of the Maharashtra Legislative Council commenced on Thursday morning amid tight security and elaborate administrative arrangements. Visuals from the polling centre at the Nagpur Tehsil Office showed elected representatives arriving to cast their votes.
The contest is primarily between BJP candidate Dr. Rajiv Potdar and Congress candidate Atul Londhe. With a majority of elected representatives in local bodies backing the BJP, Dr. Potdar is widely considered the frontrunner in the contest.
According to District Election Officer and Collector Kumar Ashirwad, all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure free, fair and peaceful polling. A total of 836 voters, comprising 419 male and 417 female voters, are eligible to cast their ballots in the by-election.
Voting is being conducted across 14 polling centres established at various tehsil offices and municipal council locations across Nagpur district, including Nagpur City, Kamthi, Ramtek, Katol, Kalmeshwar, Savner, Umred, Butibori, Wanadongri and other local authority areas.
Polling began at 8 am and will continue until 4 pm. After polling, ballot boxes will be secured in a strong room at the Collectorate’s Savings Building. The counting of votes is scheduled to take place on June 22, 2026.
The by-election is being closely watched as it will determine representation of local self-government institutions from the Nagpur region in the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
