The long-awaited inauguration of a key section of the Dipti Signal railway overbridge (RoB) project in East Nagpur has finally been scheduled, bringing relief to commuters in the area.
According to officials, the Dipti Signal–Wardhaman Nagar stretch of the RoB will be formally inaugurated and opened to the public on June 28.
The project, which was originally expected to be completed within two years, has taken nearly four years to reach its current stage. While the Wardhaman Nagar arm of the bridge has been ready for the past two months, traffic movement had not been allowed pending its formal inauguration.
However, significant portions of the project remain unfinished. Construction work on the Chikhli Square and Mini Mata Nagar arms is still underway, and authorities have not announced any deadline for their completion. These sections are considered crucial for the full functionality of the overbridge project.
The RoB is being constructed by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation, which is also overseeing the redevelopment of Itwari railway station and the construction of the Itwari–Umred railway line.
The bridge is being built near Level Crossing (LC) No. 73, located around one kilometre from Itwari railway station. Once fully completed, the RoB is expected to eliminate the railway crossing and improve traffic flow in the area.
However, all three major projects being executed by MRIDC in the region—the Dipti Signal RoB, Itwari station redevelopment and the Itwari–Umred rail line—are yet to be completed and have witnessed delays in execution.
With the opening of the Dipti Signal–Wardhaman Nagar section, commuters are expected to get partial relief, even as work continues on the remaining portions of the project.
