Despite an expenditure of over Rs 2,000 crore, Nagpur’s 24-hour water supply scheme has failed to deliver on its promise, with resettlement and restoration works still incomplete.
The scheme, undertaken by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), was projected to ensure round-the-clock drinking water access to city residents. However, the project remains mired in implementation delays, incomplete pipeline work, and unresolved rehabilitation of affected structures.
Companies entrusted with executing the scheme collected payments but left critical components unfinished. NMC has initiated punitive action against errant contractorsthough residents continue to face acute water shortages.
The revenue department has also been flagged for lacking updated information on the water supply situation, raising questions over inter-departmental coordination.
With Nagpur’s summer water stress intensifying, civic activists and citizens have demanded a time-bound audit of the scheme’s expenditure and a firm completion deadline for pending works.
