In a move aimed at curbing child marriages, the Maharashtra State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has recommended that the date of birth of both the bride and groom be made mandatory on wedding invitation cards. The proposal is expected to be submitted to the state government for consideration.
According to the commission, displaying the birth dates on invitation cards would help authorities and society verify the legal age of the couple before marriage and strengthen efforts to prevent child marriages. The recommendation comes in the wake of concerns over cases involving minor mothers and alleged child marriages reported from parts of the state.
If approved by the Maharashtra government, the rule could become a significant step toward ensuring compliance with child marriage laws and protecting children’s rights across the state.
