An 18-year-old NEET aspirant from Maharashtra’s Hingoli district allegedly died by suicide, leaving behind an emotional video message for his mother that has drawn attention to the immense pressure faced by students preparing for competitive examinations.
The student, identified as Sushil Dhage, had appeared for the NEET (UG) re-examination held on June 21. The retest was conducted after the original examination held on May 3 was cancelled following allegations of a question paper leak.
According to police and family members, Sushil recorded a brief video message on his mobile phone before his death. In the clip, he apologised to his mother and expressed emotional distress. The video was later shared with family members.
In their complaint to the police, family members stated that Sushil had found the NEET re-examination difficult and had been under considerable stress following the test. The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) is the gateway for admission to undergraduate medical courses across India and is taken annually by millions of students competing for around one lakh MBBS and other medical seats.
This year’s examination came under scrutiny after allegations of a paper leak led authorities to cancel the May 3 test. Following an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), a re-examination was conducted on June 21 for affected candidates.
Police have registered a case and initiated further investigation into the incident. The tragedy has once again highlighted growing concerns over academic pressure and the mental health challenges faced by students preparing for highly competitive entrance examinations.
