The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court on Monday directed public interest litigation (PIL) petitioner Nishank Nayak to submit a list of footballers from Nagpur who have represented India at the international level. The court granted him time till Tuesday to furnish the details.
The direction was issued by a bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Rohit Joshi while hearing Nayak’s PIL seeking the reopening of Kasturchand Park (KP) Ground for sports activities.
In his petition, Nayak argued that KP Ground had served as one of Nagpur’s premier football venues for decades, hosting several state and national-level tournaments. He claimed that many players who trained at the ground went on to represent India in national and international football competitions.
The petitioner further stated that the ground has remained closed for sports activities since 2021, with security personnel deployed to prevent players from accessing the facility. He contended that the restriction is illegal and has deprived sportspersons of the opportunity to use one of the city’s historic sporting venues.
