After a long wait, the monsoon finally made a strong comeback on Wednesday, bringing widespread rain to Nagpur and several parts of Vidarbha. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert for Nagpur, Bhandara, Wardha and Chandrapur districts as heavy showers lashed the region.
According to the IMD, Nagpur recorded 62.2 mm of rainfall till 11.30 pm. The weather department has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds of 40-50 kmph and moderate to heavy rainfall at many places over the next 24 hours. Monsoon activity is expected to intensify further across Vidarbha.
A Yellow Alert has been issued for Buldhana, where thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds and light rain are likely at isolated places. Akola, Amravati, Yavatmal and Washim are also expected to receive light rainfall at some locations.
Dr Praveen Kumar, Scientist and Head of the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Nagpur, said the strengthening monsoon is being driven by a low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal.”
Under the influence of this system, most parts of Vidarbha are likely to receive widespread rainfall over the next 48 to 72 hours. Both eastern and western Vidarbha may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period,” he said.
The fresh spell of rain is expected to improve soil moisture and provide a boost to kharif sowing activities. However, intense showers could also lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupt road traffic.
Several underpasses, including those at Manish Nagar, Gaddigodam and Loha Pul, were submerged after heavy evening showers, making them temporarily inaccessible to motorists. While commuters faced traffic disruptions and had to wade through knee-deep water or take longer routes, many residents welcomed the much-needed revival of the monsoon.
The IMD’s outlook for July suggests contrasting rainfall patterns across Vidarbha. Eastern districts are likely to receive above-normal rainfall during the month, while western Vidarbha is expected to record below-normal rainfall overall, despite the widespread showers forecast over the next few days.
