Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) has launched a dual-course programme for postgraduate Zoology students. Under this initiative, students can pursue a Diploma in Sericulture along with their master’s degree to gain practical and industry-focused skills.
Around 40 students are currently benefiting from the programme. They receive hands-on training at the university’s Centre for Sericulture and Bioresource Management Research (CSBR) in Amba Vihar, Subhash Nagar. The training covers the entire silk production process, including silkworm rearing, silk fibre extraction and other related techniques. Students attend diploma classes on Fridays and Saturdays after being given early leave from their regular postgraduate classes.
The university said the programme follows the University Grants Commission (UGC) and National Education Policy (NEP 2020) guidelines, which encourage students to pursue two courses at the same time.
Dr Varsha Dhurvey, Head of the Department of Zoology and Director of CSBR, said the course has received a good response from students. She said the skill-based diploma will improve students’ job prospects and also help them start their own sericulture businesses, as the demand for genuine silk products continues to grow.
RTMNU is also considering introducing similar dual-course options for students in other biology-related subjects in the future.
