The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has collected ₹25.69 lakh in penalties from 155 hospitals and healthcare establishments for violating biomedical waste management rules over the last three years, according to information obtained through the RTI Act.
The action was taken between January 1, 2023, and May 31, 2026, highlighting continued non-compliance with the Biomedical Waste Management Rules. RTI activist Abhay Kolarkar revealed that Laxminagar Zone recorded the highest number of violations, with 17 hospitals penalised. Dhantoli and Hanuman Nagar reported 12 violations each, followed by Dharampeth with eight. Hospitals in Nehru Nagar, Gandhibagh, Satranjipura, Lakadganj, Aashi Nagar, and Mangalwari were also fined.
The RTI documents show that the NMC has agreements with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and authorised biomedical waste treatment agencies for the safe collection, transport and scientific disposal of waste generated by its healthcare facilities.
The civic body claims it has achieved 100% collection and scientific disposal of biomedical waste from its own hospitals. NMC generated 1,632.06 tonnes of biomedical waste in 2023, 1,862.94 tonnes in 2024, and 1,574.59 tonnes in 2025. In the first five months of 2026, the city generated 930.95 tonnes, all of which was reportedly collected and disposed of scientifically. The RTI also states that 3.32 lakh kg of plastic biomedical waste was sent for recycling in 2023, while 3.20 lakh kg was recycled in 2024.
Kolarkar said that although NMC’s own healthcare facilities are following proper disposal practices, repeated violations by private hospitals show that biomedical waste segregation and disposal norms are still not being followed consistently. He warned that improper disposal of biomedical waste can endanger sanitation workers, healthcare staff, the public, and the environment.
