Maharajbagh Zoo is set to receive four marsh crocodiles and one emu from Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar under an animal exchange programme aimed at strengthening its reptile collection and enhancing the visitor experience.
In return, Maharajbagh will send five blue bulls (nilgai) to Nandankanan. The exchange is expected to include two pairs of crocodiles and an emu. Before the transfer takes place, the zoo will obtain approval from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA).
After receiving clearance, a team of veterinarians will visit Nandankanan to examine the animals and select the crocodiles. The crocodiles will be housed in Maharajbagh’s existing enclosure after repairs and habitat preparation.
The enclosure has remained empty since the death of the zoo’s last two crocodiles a few years ago.The emu, a large flightless bird native to Australia, will be kept in the zoo’s aviary section or a separate enclosure after completing quarantine and health checks.
Zoo officials believe the addition of crocodiles will revive one of Maharajbagh’s major attractions, especially for children and wildlife enthusiasts.
The proposal had been under discussion for several months, and Nandankanan has now agreed to provide the animals, paving the way for the exchange.
