A 52-year-old woman and her 33-year-old son were found dead in their flat in Nagpur’s Mahal area on Wednesday night. Police suspect the two died by suicide after consuming poison.The deceased have been identified as Abhaya Anant Khankhoje (52) and her son Advait Anant Khankhoje (33), residents of Shri Guru Mauli Apartment under the Kotwali Police Station limits.
The incident came to light after a neighbour alerted police around 9.30 pm, saying the flat had remained locked since morning and repeated attempts to contact the occupants had failed.Police entered the apartment and found both mother and son lying dead in a bedroom. During the investigation, officers recovered a handwritten suicide note, two bottles of suspected poison, and two mobile phones, all of which were seized as evidence.
Preliminary investigations revealed that both Abhaya and Advait had been undergoing treatment for cancer. Police believe they may have taken the extreme step due to depression linked to their illness, though the exact reason will be confirmed only after the investigation is complete.
The bodies have been sent to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem examination. Police will also verify the handwriting in the suicide note and are awaiting the post-mortem and chemical analysis reports to determine the exact cause of death.
An accidental death case has been registered at Kotwali Police Station under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Further investigation is underway.
