Sairaj Nayse and Fizza Akbani emerged as Under-10 boys and girls singles champions respectively on the penultimate day’s play of the Khasdar Krida Mahotsav badminton tournament at the Subhedar Hall here on Monday.

In an exciting U-10 boys singles summit clash, Sairaj rallied back splendidly to overcome the spirited challenge from left-hander Sparsh Nandanwar 17-21, 21-15, 21-7.

Sairaj, a Standard III student of Narayana Vidyalayam, Chinchbhavan, lost the first game narrowly but bounced back strongly to win the next two games quite easily to clinch his maiden district title. Sairaj, who is eight years old, trains under Kunal Dasarwar.

On the other hand, the U-10 girls singles final was a one-sided affair. Fizza Akbani trounced Anvee Wajgi 21-9, 21-7.

As expected Malvika Bansod sailed into the U-19 girls singles final. The ace city shuttler outclassed Sanika Durugkar 21-2, 21-6.

However, the second semifinal was a nail-biting affair. Shruti Chokhandre shocked second seed Livia Fernandez 21-15, 19-21, 25-23 to clinch her place in the summit showdown with Malvika.

The U-19 boys singles final will be played between top seed Nabeel Ahmed and second seed Sifat Arora. While Nabeel dismissed third seed Aayush Jadhav, Sifat got the better of Shashank Kulal in straight games.
