The best time of everyone’s life is childhood when one use to paddle on their cool bicycles for hours exploring new places with friends, however, with evolution of new technologies and vast increase of automobile industries the use of bicycle has decreased rapidly.

The United Nations General Assembly on April 12, 2018 declared June 3 to be observed as ‘World Bicycle Day’, acknowledging the “uniqueness, longevity, and versatility” of the bicycle. Since then June 3 is celebrated as the World Bicycle day. The man behind the observance of “World Bicycle Day” is Professor Leszek J. Sibilski, a professor of sociology and a former member of the Polish National Olympic Cycling Team.

The day is observed by all the bicycle enthusiasts across the globe with great excitement and fun. The aim of the event is mainly to focus on devoting particular attention to the bicycle in current era of automobiles.

For a long time now, the bicycle has been recognized as a sustainable mode of transportation that is simple, affordable, reliable, clean, and enhances urban mobility and access.

India being a developing country, is heading towards easy and luxurious lifestyle. Use of four wheelers, sitting in office for hours, consumption of unhealthy food has gradually increased the rate of health related issues. Even after being aware of all the ill effects, people choose to continue the habits. In such circumstances, it thus becomes important for local bodies to promote cycling as a way to fitness.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), safe infrastructure for walking and cycling is also a pathway for achieving greater health equity. For the poorest urban sector who often cannot afford private vehicles, walking and cycling can provide a form of transport while reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, diabetes, and even death. Accordingly, improved active transport is not only healthy; it is also equitable and cost-effective.

On the occasion of World Bicycle day today, City based businessman, Aniruddha, owner of Ncyclopedia and a cyclist informed that a group of bicycle enthusiast with a group ‘Saddleup’ along with ‘Ncyclopedia’ organized a bicycle ride to promote the use of bicycle as it has many good effects on human body as well as on the environment. Many people actively participated in the ride, he added.

This was to encourage the youths and people to paddle more as it will help them to maintain physical health and will also help in making earth a healthy planet by lowering the use of automobiles.
