Salters’ Chemistry Camp India at Department of Chemistry VNIT from Jan 3

Department of Chemistry, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur in association with IGNOU Regional Centre, Nagpur is organizing “Salters’ Chemistry Camp” under Sankalp, as a part of Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the institute, from January 3 to 5, 2020. This three days event is sponsored by Royal Society of Chemistry (London), Indian Chapter Bangalore and Salters’ Institute, UK.

The motive behind this camp is to spread awareness about chemical science by providing school students from diverse backgrounds, an opportunity to explore practical chemistry and inspire them to pursue chemical science at higher studies. Around seventy five students (boys and girls) of 9 th standard from Zilla parishad school, Nagpur Municipal Corporation school and schools of nearby districts (Gadchiroli, Wardha, Bhandara, Gardiya and Warora) will participate in Salters’ camp.

This is the second Salter’s Chemistry Camp at Department of Chemistry, VNIT-Nagpur for the students of school level. The previous one was held in December, 2018 to witness grand success and that was the very first event of such type in the city. Dr Suresh S.

Umare, Professor & Head and Dr. Chayan Das, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, VNIT are the coordinators of the programme. Dr. P. Sivaswaroop, Regional Director, IGNOU Regional Centre, Nagpur is the coordinator on behalf of IGNOU. S. Prabhuraman, Principal Saraswati Vidyalaya, Nagpur has extended strong support and assistance in organising this event.

Salters Chemistry Camps will provide an action-packed programme including hands-on practical activities in University labs. Various exciting activities are part of the three days camp that includes practical demonstrations, forensic analysis, fun science, health science, physical fitness lectures, campus tour, lab visits are the parts of the camp. For the benefit of the students’ community, entire program is scheduled in Marathi and Hindi for the better understanding of the concepts.

It is strongly believed that Salter’s Chemistry Camp will infuse fun and interest in learning Chemical Science and motivate the participants to develop both awareness of, and a long-term interest in chemical sciences. The participants will also get a taste of the vibrant life of VNIT.

The Salters’ Chemistry Camps India, part of the “Inspirational Science Programme” project in India, has been supported by Dr. Yusuf Hamied (Non-executive Chairman – Cipla Limited) a leading Indian philanthropist and pioneer in the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Hamied has committed Rs 8 crore for the four-year programme which includes training school science teachers.
