“Human rights and the right to privacy: where India stands in terms of international law” Webinar conducted by law department of Dr. Ambedkar college Deeksha bhoomi

In the Pandemic situation of COVID-19 when the educational institutions are closed and giving education using online portals. Senior faculty members of the Department of Dr. Ambedkar College Deeksha Bhoomi, Nagpur have organized the webinar for LLM students and faculty members on 27/10/2020. The webinar was presided over by the Guest Speaker Adv. Afreen Khan, practicing advocate from Bombay High Court and Supreme Court of India. The guest speaker who is also working with the Samvidhaan, Vidhi Center for Legal Policy as a fellow has enlightened the students on the topic “Human Rights and the Right to Privacy: Where India Stands in terms of International Law”.

In her address to the students and faculty members, she had covered the topic by informing various International Conventions and Covenants which cover the aspect relating to the Right to Privacy which is also recognized as Human Rights.

In her lecture, she has covered the Right to Privacy dealt with by the Supreme Court of India in the Judgment of K.S. Puttaswami’s Judgment, in which the Right to Privacy is held to be a fundamental right of the individual. Adv. Afreen Khan also covered the aspect of the Right to Privacy in the light of Aadhar Judgment pronounced by Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.

While concluding her speech she has also enlightened the gathering and shared her views for the implementation of Independent Law for protecting the Right to Privacy. More particularly she has quoted that in the era of use of Social Media the Right to Privacy is required to be protected by implementing special laws. While dealing with the Question-Answer session she has also enlightened the audience that the Right to Privacy may not be an absolute right but it has its own restrictions which are to be followed with the other provisions of the Constitution of India.

The idea for organizing the webinar session was proposed by Adv. Vivek Awchat, the visiting faculty to the Department of law and the same was supported with the encouragement of the Professor and Head of the Department, Dr. Ambedkar College Deekshabhoomi, Nagpur Dr. H.V. Menon.

Associate Professors Dr. Varsha Deshpande, Dr. Sandhya Kalamdhad, and Assistant Professors Dr. Pratima Lokhande, Mrs. Vaishali Sukhadeve, Ms. Shilpa Rathod, and Ms. Sazia Bari have supported organizing the webinar and also encouraged the students to participate in the online learning process.
