Impact of COVID on Cancer patients: Do no ignore early signs and symptoms

As the pandemic has evolved, it has had huge impact on people. The impact multiplies when a person is a cancer patient. Several studies have shown that cancer patients are more prone to get affected by COVID-19.

Undoubtedly, patients with cancer need special attention during these trying times. Dr. Vaibhav Chaudhary, Medical Oncologist, Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur shares that data from different countries shows cancer patients are slightly at a higher risk than others. Cancer patients are immunocompromised and their capacity to fight covid  is less as compared to average individual. “If the cancer patient develops COVID – 19 infection, the chance of serious complications increases, as some might have been going through treatment of  cytotoxic chemotherapy or radiation therapy”, said Dr. Chaudhary.

Several patients are ignoring early signs and symptoms of diseases and are reluctant to visit doctors. Health experts suggest that as a result of this, people are losing their lives.World over, it has been observed that during this pandemic the cancer screening programs have taken a hit and as a consequence the number of newly diagnosed early stage cancer has decreased significantly. This led to more and more patients presenting in advanced stages of cancer, which decreases their survival and cure rates. Also many patients have postponed their cancer surgeries due to fear of contracting covid in hospital, this again compromises the cancer care and management.

Patients with already diagnosed cancer need continuous follow ups with their doctors which must not be ignored in any case.Patients with cancer are a vulnerable population, and they are prone to much harm during such pandemics, including susceptibility to life-threatening infections and interruption of their cancer or usual medical care, informed Dr. Chaudhary.
