Sex workers at Ganga Jamuna celebrates after SC’s historic order

After a gap of seven months sex workers at Ganga Jamuna locality came together to celebrate in Nagpur after Supreme Court passed a historic order of recognizing prostitution as a profession.

Sex workers and their supporters, burst crackers, distributed sweet on this occasion.

On Saturday a Jallosh was organized by a local politician and former National Congress Party (NCP) leader Jwala Dhote to celebrate the occasion with sex workers from Ganga Jamuna.

The Apex court of Friday ordered that all those engaged in it and their children are entitled to the same human “decency and dignity” as is available to others, and the “opportunities” to grow and advance in their lives guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution — right to life.

The Supreme Court (SC) also directed cops to neither interfere nor take criminal action against commercial sex workers (CSWs).

In October 2021, Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar, under Section 7(1) (b) of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act had permanently prohibited prostitution in red-light area Ganga-Jamuna.

The city Police Chief Kumar declared Balaji Mandir, Chinteshwar Mandir, Juni Mangalwari, Baba Kalimshah Dargah, Durga Devi Mandir, Sharda Devi Mandir, Radha Swami Satsang, Itwari, NMC Chinteshwar Primary School, Hindustan High School, Ganga-Jamuna Police Chowky and MSEDCL Office, Chinteshwar Branch as ‘public places.’

He had banned prostitution within 200 metres of these ‘public places’ as per the law.

Since then all the sex workers were evacuated from the area and all the activities were banned.
