A 17-year-old brain-dead gives new lease of life to 3 the patients in the city

A 17-year-old girl lost her life in a road accident and suffered brain death. The consent for organ donation of both the kidneys and liver of the deceased was given by her father and two sisters. The Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) said the donated organs gave a new lease of life to three patients. ZTCC further informed, the donor’s family did not wish to disclose the name and identity.

The donated organs were allocated by the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) by the State guidelines. The liver was transplanted to a 38 years old female at New Era Hospital. One kidney was transplanted to a 30-year-old male at New Era Hospital, and the second kidney was transplanted to a 27 years old male at Orange City Hospital and Research Centre.

New Era Hospital staff created the honour corridor & paid tributes to the donor.

Dr Sanjay Kolte, President of the ZTCC, stated that a family from Gondia was unable to donate the organs of a member because the city lacked the necessary facilities. Dr Sanjay Kolte said “Another donation was missed due to the family refusing to shift the donor from Gondia. They were willing to donate if harvesting was done there. Request all hospitals to apply for Non- Transplant Organ Retrieval centres (NTORC) so that such opportunities don’t go to waste. Please work towards mobilising people for more donations and hospitals for reporting more brain deaths.”
