The problem of stray dogs is a significant concern not only in Nagpur city but also in rural areas. Recently, a young boy in Mauda was attacked and seriously injured by stray dogs, echoing a similar incident in Katol last year.
The population of stray dogs in Nagpur city is in the lakhs, yet the administration seems more focused on statistics than on a comprehensive solution. Animal advocates claim that government agencies and NGOs tasked with sterilizing stray dogs are not effectively utilizing allocated funds, exacerbating the issue.
The stray dog menace can be controlled. The United Nations Organisation has suggested measures like sterlisation, proper vaccination, adaptation and sanitation. The Netherlands country has demonstrated how this can be done.
The people keeping pets and administration also are lethargic towards vaccination. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation does not have data about how many dogs were vaccinated in the last one year. It was told that there are 2,900 injections of anti-rabies in Indira Gandhi Hospital of NMC.
The vaccination is necessary as a protection from disease like rabies. This disease claims 20,000 lives in India annually. The United States has stopped importing canines from India.
