AIIMS Nagpur has reached a major milestone with approval to conduct liver transplants, reinforcing its position as a premier healthcare institution in Central India. This achievement follows its success in kidney, corneal, and bone marrow transplants, along with prior approval for heart transplants.
The introduction of liver transplant services at AIIMS Nagpur promises to revolutionize healthcare accessibility for economically disadvantaged and common people in the region. By providing advanced medical care locally, the institute reduces the need for expensive and challenging travel to metropolitan hospitals, alleviating financial and logistical burdens on poor families.
With robust funding support through government schemes and CSR initiatives, AIIMS Nagpur ensures that life-saving liver transplants remain accessible to even the most underserved patients, offering them a vital chance at recovery and advancing health equity in the region.
Since the inception of its kidney transplant program in May 2023, AIIMS Nagpur has successfully performed 35 kidney transplants, including 10 from live donors, 19 from brainstem-dead donors, and six using Donations after Circulatory Death (DCD). Impressively, AIIMS Nagpur is the first among AIIMS centers and the third in India to adopt DCD protocols for kidney transplants.
Additionally, the institute has made significant progress in corneal care, completing 17 corneal transplants and 22 tissue retrievals. Its Bone Marrow Transplant Unit has also shown promising results, successfully conducting six procedures to date. These achievements underscore AIIMS Nagpur’s commitment to providing cutting-edge medical care to the community.
While kidney transplants are supported under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY), liver, heart, and bone marrow transplants rely on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding to ensure accessibility for patients regardless of financial constraints. Dr Prashant P Joshi, executive director of AIIMS Nagpur, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are committed to establishing AIIMS Nagpur as a centre of excellence in organ and tissue transplantation. With the approval for liver and heart transplants, coupled with our advanced infrastructure and skilled team, we are well-prepared to meet the growing healthcare demands of Central India,” he said.
