At least hundreds of workers, mostly women, at Golden Fiber Company in the Nandgaon Peth industrial estate suffered food poisoning. Many have been taken to the District General Hospital in Amravati. Early reports suggest that the poisoning was caused by contaminated water. The incident happened on Sunday morning.
Golden Fiber ALP is a linen yarn manufacturing company located in the Textile Complex at Nandgaon Peth MIDC. The company employs around 700 workers, most of whom are women from rural areas.
The workers arrived at the company on Sunday morning as usual. Shortly after, some began feeling unwell, with a few starting to vomit after breakfast. One by one, more workers complained of symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and headaches.
The company management called a doctor, and some women were treated at the factory. However, with many workers feeling unwell, they were sent to the General Hospital, where around 43 workers were admitted.
MP Balwant Wankhade visited the hospital soon after and checked on the condition of the workers. He also directed the doctors to provide them with the required treatment.
Mangesh alias Pappu Patil, a leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, accused the company management of initially trying to conceal the incident. He stated that when they attempted to enter the factory after hearing about the food poisoning, they were blocked. The MNS then informed the Nandgaon Peth Police.
Patil also claimed that the workers were taken to the District Hospital only after the police got involved. “MNS workers arranged transport to help the affected workers reach the hospital,” he said.
Patil demanded, “This is a serious incident, and a thorough investigation should be conducted into the matter.”
