City Traffic Police have initiated a special campaign, “Footpath Freedom,” to address the growing issues of illegal parking and unauthorized hawker encroachments that obstruct pedestrian pathways and disrupt traffic flow across the city.
The campaign was launched following concerns that many vehicle owners park on public footpaths, blocking access for pedestrians. Additionally, hawkers often set up temporary establishments on footpaths, and their customers park vehicles nearby, further restricting movement. These obstructions force pedestrians to walk on busy roads, increasing the risk of accidents.
To curb these violations, the traffic police are taking strict action under relevant laws. Vehicles parked on footpaths are being towed under Sections 122, 127, and 177 of the Motor Vehicle Act. Unauthorized hawker setups are being removed under Sections 102 and 117 of the Maharashtra Police Act. Moving forward, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) towing vehicles will assist in enforcing the campaign, ensuring footpaths remain clear for pedestrians.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Archit Chandak, has urged citizens to park only in designated areas and for hawkers to avoid setting up establishments that block footpaths or roadsides. Hawkers are also advised to inform their customers to use proper parking spaces.
The “Footpath Freedom” campaign aims to enhance pedestrian safety and promote smoother traffic movement. The Nagpur Traffic Police have appealed to citizens to support this initiative by following traffic rules and cooperating with authorities for a safer and more organized city.
