In a major decision, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has assumed full responsibility for the maintenance and development of all city roads. This marks the end of the confusion over road-related issues, previously managed by various agencies like the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), the Public Works Department (PWD), and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
With the enforcement of Section 202 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act, the NMC is now the sole authority responsible for the city’s roads. This legal provision holds the NMC accountable, eliminating the option to shift responsibility to external agencies.
Under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act, all streets within Nagpur, whether currently public or potentially public in the future, fall under the control of the NMC, except for certain streets owned by the government or managed by other authorities. This includes full responsibility for construction, maintenance, and the materials used in these roads, such as pavements and stones.
The NMC Commissioner is granted the authority under this law to level, pave, channel, alter, repair, widen, or extend public streets as required. This broad mandate ensures that Nagpur’s road network is effectively managed, maintained, and improved to meet the city’s evolving needs.
This shift in authority means the NMC will now be directly accountable for Nagpur’s roads, eliminating delays and blame-shifting that often left issues unresolved. With this responsibility, we can expect smoother, safer roads, faster repair responses, and a more strategic approach to long-term road improvements.
With NMC now in charge, it’s time to expect better infrastructure in Nagpur, as they focus on creating a well-maintained road network that ensures the city’s growth and safety.
