Nagpur witnessed violent clashes on Monday, prompting Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to term the attack on police as a “planned conspiracy” during an Assembly session. The violence erupted in the Chitnis Park area of Mahal, following rumors that a religious text had been desecrated during a protest by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal.
What Led to the Violence?
According to CM Fadnavis, the protest by right-wing groups was against a grave, where demonstrators symbolically burned a grave sheet. However, a rumor spread that a religious message was inscribed on it, escalating tensions and triggering stone-pelting against the police.
Attack on Police & Law Enforcement
Fadnavis revealed that a crowd of around 80 people was involved in the violence. A police officer was attacked with an axe. Three Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) were assaulted. Specific houses were deliberately targeted.
Rumors & Conspiracy Behind the Violence
The Chief Minister stated that misinformation played a major role in the violence.
“Rumours were spread that religious content was burnt… It looks like a well-planned attack. No one has permission to take law and order into their hands,” he said.
Government’s Response & Security Measures
Five criminal cases have been registered. Prohibitory orders imposed in 11 police station areas and five SRPF units deployed to maintain law and order.
Deputy CM Eknath Shinde Reacts
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also condemned the clashes, calling them a “conspiracy.”
“People should not try and incite violence between two communities. Aurangzeb should not be glorified,” he said.
He further assured strict action against those responsible.
“No one will be spared. No one in Maharashtra will tolerate support for Aurangzeb.”
The situation remains tense as authorities continue to investigate the violence and ensure stability in the region.
