Nagpur police booked over 1,250 people in connection with the riots that broke out on March 17. They were produced before the court, which remanded them to police custody till March 21.
Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal members were staging demonstrations demanding the removal of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb’s tomb from Khultabad in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. They raised slogans against Aurangazeb and also burnt his effigy. Some Muslim leaders alleged that a ‘Chadar’ on which ‘Ayat’ from the Quran was printed, was burnt by the demonstrators, which led to the clashes between the two groups belonging to different communities.
The rioters also used abusive language against women police personnel and pelted stones towards them. Many police personnel were injured.
The police arrested the mastermind of the riots Fahim Khan and others. Offences under various sections have been registered in different police stations. Police arrested more than 1,250 people and presented them in a court of law on Wednesday. The court remanded them to police custody till March 21.
