Security measures were strengthened in Nagpur on Friday in anticipation of the Friday prayers amid ongoing tensions. With the situation gradually stabilizing, additional forces have been deployed to ensure safety during the Friday namaz in the holy month of Ramzan.
According to a media report, Police have heightened security across Nagpur, deploying personnel outside all mosques in the city.
This comes after widespread stone pelting and arson were reported on Monday, following rumors that a ‘chadar’ with holy inscriptions had been burned.
The incident is believed to have occurred during protests by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), which called for the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further violence.
Members of the Muslim community in Nagpur have condemned the violence that erupted on Monday, calling for an impartial investigation into the incident.
They argued that prompt police action could have prevented the unrest. In a press conference on Thursday, community leaders appealed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to meet with representatives of both communities in an effort to restore peace.
“Efforts have been made over the past two to three years to provoke the Muslim community through various means. A minister has repeatedly raised the issue of Aurangzeb. The Muslim community has no connection to Aurangzeb and has remained peaceful,” Dr. Mohammad Awes Hasan stated at the press conference.
He further alleged that the supposed ‘chadar’ burning incident led members of the Muslim community to approach the police, urging action. However, when no steps were taken, some individuals became agitated, he claimed.
During the press conference, some speakers praised the police for their efforts to restore normalcy but raised concerns that innocent individuals had been arrested in connection with the investigation into the violence.
