Irfan Ansari, a 38-year-old welder from Garib Nawaz Nagar, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday at Mayo Hospital, marking the first fatality in the recent riots in Central Nagpur. He was assaulted near Geetanjali Chowk while heading to Nagpur railway station.
According to sources, rioters intercepted and brutally thrashed Ansari between Geetanjali Chowk and Hansapuri Khadan. Severely injured, he was later found by police personnel, who rushed him to Mayo Hospital. Despite receiving treatment for six days, he succumbed to internal injuries.
Another injured individual is currently undergoing treatment at New Era Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
A case has been registered at Tehsil police station, and one suspect has been apprehended so far. Police are actively searching for more individuals involved in the attack.
Ansari’s post-mortem was conducted at Mayo Hospital under tight security. In response to the violence, authorities have strengthened security measures across Central Nagpur to prevent further unrest.
