After years of delay, the much-anticipated expansion of Nagpur’s Vidhan Bhavan is finally underway. The state government has approved the transfer of 9,670 square meters of land in Civil Lines, currently occupied by the Government Printing Press, to facilitate the project. The Ministry of Industry (MOI) has issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC), clearing the way for the land to be handed over to the Legislature.
First proposed during Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ earlier tenure, the plan had remained stalled until the Mahayuti government revived it two and a half years ago. Vidhan Sabha Speaker Adv. Rahul Narwekar has been instrumental in advancing the proposal, with formal approval secured during a key meeting on December 16, 2024.
To ensure uninterrupted operations, the printing press and the Government Library will be relocated to an equivalent plot under the Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Protection Department (FCSCPD). The Divisional Commissioner and District Collector will manage the relocation and land transfer.
The redevelopment plan envisions a state-of-the-art legislative complex with a 50-year perspective. It includes the demolition of old barracks and construction of two 15-storey administrative towers, along with a new Central Hall and upgraded legislative assembly spaces.
With metro connectivity enhancing the area’s FSI, the current site offers an ideal footprint for this iconic government project, set to reshape Nagpur’s political and architectural landscape.
