The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a “Yellow” alert for Vidarbha until May 13 due to a fresh cyclonic circulation over Central India. This system is triggering thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across the region, keeping maximum temperatures below normal for the next few days.
According to the IMD, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are likely at isolated places in Amravati, Nagpur, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Washim, and Yavatmal districts from May 10 to 13. Wind speeds may reach 40-50 kmph on May 12 and 13.
During this period, day temperatures across Vidarbha are expected to range between 38°C and 41°C, with thunderstorms likely to occur during the evening hours.
On Friday, Nagpur was the hottest in the region at 40.6°C, followed by Brahmapuri at 40.1°C and Chandrapur at 40.0°C. However, most other districts recorded temperatures below 40°C. Wardha and Washim received light showers (1 mm and 1.9 mm respectively), while the rest of Vidarbha remained dry.
Despite the dry weather, maximum temperatures in all districts remained 2 to 5 degrees below normal due to partially cloudy skies. Minimum temperatures were also reported below the seasonal average across Vidarbha, a rare occurrence during May, typically considered the peak summer month.
