In a decisive move, the State Public Works Department (PWD) on May 10 successfully demolished 19 unauthorized structures at the government colony in Ravinagar, making the area 100% encroachment-free. This marks the end of encroachments that had stood for over 70 years in one of Nagpur’s most prime government housing areas.
The operation was led by Executive Engineer Sanjay Upadhye, with heavy police deployment under the guidance of DCP Rahul Madane, DCP (Special Branch) Shweta Khedkar, and Senior Inspector Raut from Ambazari Police Station. The crackdown continued late into the night with the support of 40 police officers, including both male and female personnel. Ambulance and fire services were also on standby as a safety precaution.
Despite repeated notices, the encroachers had ignored all official warnings. Given Ravinagar’s location in the high-value Civil Lines area, authorities had no choice but to act. Some tension was reported during the demolition, but it was swiftly controlled.
PWD officials confirmed that the eviction has unlocked three large government plots, which will now be available for new residential redevelopment projects. “Vertical housing is the way forward,” said a PWD official, pointing to models in cities like Mumbai and Pune.
The action has drawn praise from citizens and planners alike, marking a significant step in urban renewal and law enforcement in Nagpur.
