In a swift and decisive move, Sadar Police Station filed a chargesheet within just two hours against a 47-year-old man accused of molesting a woman relative, in a case registered under the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023.
The accused, Mohammad Ashfaq Nazir Sheikh, a daily-wage worker residing in Goa Colony near the school for the disabled in Sadar, had allegedly been harassing the complainant and her sister for the past two years. According to the complaint, Sheikh — a relative who once lived in the same household — made repeated physical advances and inappropriate gestures toward the sisters, demanding sexual favours. Following these incidents, the complainant’s brother had evicted him from their residence.
Despite being removed from the home, Sheikh allegedly continued to visit and exploit opportunities when the complainant was alone. The latest incident occurred when he unlawfully entered the complainant’s house, lay beside her on her bed while she was asleep, and began touching her inappropriately. She raised an alarm, forcing the accused to flee the scene.
As the complainant and her brother proceeded to the police station, Sheikh reportedly intercepted and threatened them against filing a complaint. However, the woman courageously lodged a report at Sadar Police Station, prompting swift action from law enforcement.
Under the guidance of Senior Police Inspector Manish Thakre and officers including API Sadiya Somankar, API Nilesh Ghogare, and staff members Durgesh Thakur, Sandeep Sadashiv, Mohansingh Thakur, Nilesh Lode, Dnyaneshwar Wakudikar, Sachin Kawale, and Rupesh Hivarale, a case was registered under Sections 74, 75, 76, 78, 79, 296, and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
The crime detection team immediately launched a search operation, located the accused, and took him into custody. During interrogation, Sheikh reportedly confessed to the crime. He was formally arrested at 1:56 PM on May 20, following due procedure and in adherence to Supreme Court guidelines.
In a display of remarkable efficiency and dedication to justice, Sadar Police compiled all evidence, completed documentation, and filed the chargesheet within just two hours of the arrest, presenting strong witness statements and material proof before the court.
