Nagpur witnessed its first heavy rainfall on Thursday evening, leading to waterlogging in several parts of the city, especially in low-lying areas. Between 7:00 pm and 8:30 pm, the city recorded 17.6 mm of rain.
As expected, the downpour exposed the lack of monsoon preparedness by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). Rainwater entered many houses in low-lying localities, forcing residents to struggle to clear the water from their homes.
The heavy rains also led to severe waterlogging on major roads and flyovers, causing major inconvenience to commuters across the city. The downpour, which began after a cloudy day, intensified late at night with thunderstorms, resulting in traffic jams and widespread flooding.
Despite repeated assurances, the situation once again exposed the poor drainage system and lack of disaster preparedness by the civic body. Citizens expressed anger and frustration over the authorities’ failure to prevent recurring flooding, especially in vulnerable areas. Ongoing road construction and digging work across the city only made things worse, while incomplete cement road projects in residential areas added to the flooding on Thursday.
