Vendors Demand High Rates, Refuse Direct Sale
After struggling with a stamp paper shortage a few months ago, citizens are once again facing trouble—this time due to inflated prices. In Civil Lines, near the Zilla office, notary vendors are allegedly exploiting the situation by charging unusually high rates, in some cases almost double, for stamp papers and related notary services.
Although stamp papers are available at the official Tehsil office near Providence Girls High School, several notary shops in the area are reportedly refusing to sell stamp papers on their own. Instead, they are insisting that citizens use their complete notary services—which include typing and processing—at much higher prices.
As per multiple complaints, a ₹500 stamp paper is being sold for ₹1,000, and a ₹100 stamp paper is being offered for ₹300 to ₹400. Meanwhile, the same documents can be purchased at the Tehsil office with only a ₹20 to ₹50 markup over the original price.
People trying to buy only stamp papers from vendors near the Collector Office are being turned away and told to visit the Tehsil office, which is about two kilometres away. This has created unnecessary hurdles for citizens, many of whom are pressed for time or lack transport, leaving them with little choice but to pay the inflated prices.
According to a local daily report, Dr. Vipin Itankar has taken serious note of the matter. “Strictest action will be taken against those found guilty. Notary vendors indulging in such deceit will face cancellation of their licences,” he assured.
The issue highlights the urgent need for stricter regulation and better access to essential legal services. Until then, citizens are left hoping for quick action to bring fairness and relief to the system.
