App-based cab drivers have issued a stern warning to the Maharashtra government, threatening a massive ‘Chakka Jam’ protest across Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur on Wednesday, July 23, if their long-standing demands are once again overlooked during a crucial meeting scheduled with state officials on Tuesday, July 22.
The protest threat follows an ongoing indefinite hunger strike being led by gig workers’ union leader Dr. Keshav Nana Kshirsagar, who on Monday completed the fourth day of his fast in solidarity with app-based drivers fighting for their rights.
In a statement released on Monday, Dr. Kshirsagar said, “We temporarily suspended the strike on July 19 to give the government a chance to act. We pushed the shutdown to July 23. But if we are betrayed again tomorrow, the agitation will escalate.”
The union has accused the government of making repeated empty promises and delaying decisive action on critical issues impacting gig workers—particularly those employed by ride-hailing apps. Their key demands include fare regulation, capping of commissions charged by platforms, and implementation of social security measures for drivers.
With the threat of a shutdown looming over three of Maharashtra’s busiest cities, concerns have been raised about major disruptions to public transport and daily commutes. As of now, there has been no official response from the government regarding the protest call.
